Cloister: A Reflective and Multilayered Residence

Redesigning Space with Reflective Materials

Te Chih Lo, the renowned designer behind the Cloister project, has transformed a narrowed floor plan into a stunning residence. By knocking through and combining two individual spaces, Lo has created a unique living environment. The application of transparent and translucent design techniques allows for a smooth flow of natural lighting, creating an ever-changing effect reminiscent of a cloister. The overlapping visual perception adds depth and dimension to the living space, accommodating a big family of three generations.

In the middle of the living space, a marble TV wall divides the common area while maintaining an open-floor plan. The clever use of glass materials ensures privacy when the lights are switched off, as they appear reflective, similar to a grey mirror. This design choice not only adds a touch of elegance but also enhances the functionality of the space.

The Cloister project spans 149 square meters and is located in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. It was completed in October 2021, showcasing the designer's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to creating a harmonious living environment.

Throughout the design process, Te Chih Lo prioritized sustainability and eco-friendliness. The space is decorated with veneers of CNS F1 label, ensuring low formaldehyde emissions. Eco-friendly building materials, curtains, and Dulux coatings were also used to minimize the environmental impact. The original wooden and marble floorings were preserved, reducing waste and integrating seamlessly with the new design.

One of the notable challenges overcome in the Cloister project was the incorporation of glass panels and a grey mirror above the TV wall in the dining room, kitchen, and study. This design choice allows for seamless interaction and visibility between family members in different areas of the residence. The reflective feature helps connect each family member and the common areas, making the living space greater than the sum of its parts.

The design of the Cloister is a visual feast of regularity and depth. The horizontal lattice design on the ceiling echoes the folds of the translucent curtains, creating a continuous flow from top to bottom. Darker wooden materials and black coatings were strategically used to embellish and cover the AC installation, creating a perception of heightened and brighter space. The hollowed-out lattice and the darker color palette contribute to the overall depth and sophistication of the design.

The Cloister project, captured beautifully by photographer CHIU CHUANG-CHIEH, has been recognized for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
